Among many examples of where legal oks are deceiving with grand old homes. In both France and Savannah, Georgia it was common to see surfaces faux painted to look like wood, marble etc. This is an example from a historic home in Savannah which has painted wainscoting throughout. According to the docent that guided this tour it was more expensive to paint these surfaces than to use the materials. Don’t know if that’s true but I will say the faux treatments I saw were well done.

A good craftsman is open to all methods of work. On my trip to Savannah, Georgia and last year to France I saw many examples of woodworking methods. Many woodworking snobs would be surprised to see an equal use of wainscot and wall frames. The rule is what makes sense given the architectural style. Here is an example of an elaborate wainscot style that is surprisingly simple with the joinery that I did and it illustrates that unless you’re building furniture, the appearance is often what guides the work.
